This painting was inspired by a cloudy, cool day when my father and I ventured to Santa Cruz Island on Earth Day. Although I wasn’t feeling up for a swim at first, I pushed myself to dive in. What I found below the surface amazed me—the vibrant purples, blues, and reds of the cove stood out after the loss of kelp from the winter storms, and there was one lonesome baby kelp anchored to a rock.
For anyone facing their own storm, may this painting remind you to hold fast and find hope in even the smallest things.
