About
"Catalina Lights" draws inspiration from a photograph taken during my second freediving course on Catalina Island. This piece allowed me to explore a new approach, starting with my favorite technique: glazing. By layering transparent paint over the dried surface and preserving the whites of the primed canvas—much like watercolor—I expiremented with a looser style and with heightened contrast.
The flowing background, created with fluid, translucent layers, was inspired by the tropical hues of Catalina's waters, with a hint of the ethereal beauty of the northern lights. Time spent in Avalon, with its twinkling charm, encouraged me to reflect its magic in this piece. Yet the true wonder lay beneath the surface—an underwater realm where light danced like stars in the cosmos.
