Embracing the rich colors of the rainforest...

Oil paintings are coming 3.28.25

In preparation for a trip to Costa Rica, Marie McKenzie’s newest oil paintings envision the underwater world of kelp as a tropical rainforest, exploring deep shadows and vibrant hues that blur the line between imagination and reality.

These new paintings will be featured in a two-person exhibit at the Riviera Beach House, presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara. Join the opening reception, artist talks, and the unveiling of new work on March 28th from 5–8 p.m

Meet the Artist

Marie McKenzie is an oil painter and sculptor based in Ojai, CA, whose artworks are inspired by the coast. Discovering kelp's vital significance and alarming decline in 2021 shifted her focus from seascapes to underwater visions, ultimately leading her to confront her fears of the ocean through freediving.

This transformative journey inspired her recent paintings. By illuminating the beauty of kelp forests, she strives to foster connection and contribute to their restoration through her partnership with SeaTrees.
